Spring time in the garden

It’s been a wonderful day, dry and sunny.

We woke up, had coffee and bacon buttys then walked to the butcher to order a ham for Good Friday . Then stopped off on our local coffee shop for a snack.

On our walk we found that a neighbour was having a tree chopped down. The tree surgeon dropped it off to our back and we inspected all the trees. I was sad to see the fir removed as it had the prettiest cones and foliage but it’s not my tree and not my choice. I will gather the fir cones for kindling and rescue a few to hang on my Christmas wreath this year.

I thought I was going to sit down and have a rest but I decided to direct sow some carrots, greens and radish in the raised beds. We aren’t expecting another cold snap so hopefully they will grow. I notices a tiny nasturtium growing from last year so I am excited to see what comes back.

The other edible flower I sowed were some calendula in pretty yellows. Surrounding the rock it should look beautiful.

I planted last years strawberries in there new bed and some Phacelia. I moved my new blueberry bushes ( tiny twigs) up to the allotment but I need to add a bit more acid to the soil because they prefer ericaceous. I will hopefully plant them tomorrow as well as my hydrangea Annabel ( which I’d also a tiny twig) she will go on the rockery but for now I need to get her in a pot and plant her after the build.

Phacelia: one of my favourites , the flowers are really pretty plus they turn into green manure so great for the soil.

Our friends bought us some raspberry and tayberries and I have been wondering were to plant them, but since I drew a proper plan for the garden I feel more confident in my choices.

I put some supports for the raspberry canes and then where the soil is bare I sowed some poppies, cornflowers and chrysanthemums. My plan is to encourage as much insects and bees into the garden so that plants can pollinate easier with more visitors.

Next year I may have more raspberries so I don’t want to fill up too many spaces. My blackberry will go with the the others on the fence at the front of the plot.

After a while Gavin and Frank joined me.

Frank chased cats and barked at distant dogs and Gavin chopped up some of the fresh logs.

Mr fothergills tomatoes 🍅

I headed to my freezer and sowed some every old tomato seeds from Gavin’s grandads collection and chose 4 varieties to feast on this summer.

Hopefully I will have a few plants of each.

The last garden job to do was sow some more of last years most beautiful flowers my China aster and phlox. And some zinnias ( which I could not grow).

Plus some leeks and coriander because why not.

A busy day.

I felt good to be outside for a few hours.

Everything got a good drink and next week I hope we will get some seedlings.

My marigolds, peas and Sweetpeas are growing every day.

So tell the people you love you love them, and check your stool, it may save your life.
