When dreams become reality

Can I find a cast iron fireplace on a budget?

I have been searching for months for a fireplace. My last house had four beautiful cast iron Victorianesq fireplaces. When we moved into to our forever home we had an ugly eighties monstrosity.

It’s a beast!

Last winter we installed a log burner which we love but the rest of the chimneys had been removed. We still had a breast in the bedroom so I suggested that we put a fireplace back. Because we had just had our log burner installed Gav didn’t want me messing with the breast so I started looking for a fireplace that was flatter.

I must have looked at hundreds. I have fallen in love with about 10 so far.

Then I found it.

And I watched it. Asked questions. Then they dropped the price to £30.

And I had to have it.

It was flat, cast iron and 1880s and did I mention beautiful.

The room before!!

It’s going at the foot of the bed.

The built in cupboard is being ripped out when the water tank is removed.

The fireplace is late Victorian era, C.1880-1890. The fire is ornate and has a witchy biophilic design of pretty ferns on each side, under the mantel and there is a decorative corbel in the centre. The fire has an arched opening that has repeating leaf border but the best bit is it’s flat. Can be bolted to the wall and we can use the mantle.

I plan to paint the cove in, use my very rusty set painting skills to create some depth.

Our bedroom is starting to take shape. I will share it with you when it’s complete.
