Well October is over. Lockdown is on and I thought I would share some trivial bits I have loved this month. Gratitude is something we talk about, it trends, but I like to sit down and focus on what has brought me joy over the last month.
My waffle maker
I bought this for our first anniversary. I make a voucher for Gavin to make 12 batches of waffles. It has been an utter hit. So far I have made banana, potato and ham & cheese. I haven’t made traditional ones yet but we love it. We are learning that I don’t need to make large amounts. The ham and cheese was epic but we only needed half each.
The Magicians series
When I am drawing I like to have something to watch and listen too. I saw this series and thought this is my cup of tea.
It wasn’t.
It was a hard slog but I am now in series 3 and loving it. The biggest issue I had with it is that Quentin is the most unlikeable self-centred character. The women with the excepted Margo are all a bit shrew. It’s a mismatch of highly unlikeable characters that all have so many flaws they are unrelatable. Even the headmaster makes Dumbledor’s incompetence look like he was teacher of the year.
When you start with a series there is normally one character you bond too. Not in this. In series two Margo ( who swears too much and is a little full on) comes into her own. Alice is still as unlikeable as Quentin. Penny is another redeeming character as well as his partner Kady. But again it took forever to bond to these characters. They don’t look after each other mentally but they they are always there to rescue each other. It’s a rather odd series.
There is also not a lot of magic in it. Just a lot of running around and solving issues. I do love all the Harry Potter references and finally Julia us also become an awesome character but it took so long I am surprised it was granted four seasons. Now I am invested. I want to know how the majority of the characters will get on exception whiney Alice.
I am really enjoying it it just took a while to get into it and now I am invested and loving it.
Leather candle
After a year of not burning my candle I have decided to just do it. It smells like heaven. Life’s too short to not use things you are saving for no reason.
So now when we sit down to watch a film. We turn the lights off, light my leather candle, turn our phones off and just relax. It smells to good and it helps create an ambience when it’s time to just switch off and enjoy.
Dressing up the dog
I am not going to say a lot about this. We know it’s silly but Frank doesn’t seam to mind. It’s bringing me a lot of joy at the moment.

Starface
I have a lot of skincare, we know this, I am obsessed but I saw these and they were recommended by Caroline Hirons so they must be good. So far so brilliant.
“Hydro-Stars are made with 1 ingredient only: Hydrocolloid. Hydrocolloid is a substance borrowed from surgical dressing that’s clinically proven to help flatten pimples by absorbing bacteria and fluid.”
So some times my face looks a bit crazy but I think they are great!!

Ravens and crows
My friend Charlotte challenged me to take part in @Folktaleweek on Instagram. I am not sure if I will have time to do all of them but I plan on doing at least one.
The prompts are
- Birth
- Ritual
- Courtship
- Solstice
- Death
- Harvest
- Dance
So if I love it enough I will hopefully sell it as a print but we will see. If it ends up on my wall you know it makes me happy.
It’s time to get the paints out I am going to play with water colour and gouache and I am slightly obsessed with palmistry/ cosmic inspire art at the moment so I think it will fit in well. I am hoping to theme it around my love of crows and ravens. In Japan there crows were everywhere and huge. So I have a few lovely close ups of these intelligent birds.
In summary
So that’s it for October. I hope you were okay this month, it’s getting tough again in the UK. I hope everyone is safe and sound. I am really trying to focus on how lucky I am at the moment and take pleasure in amazing small things.
What small things have brought you joy?
