Can you take your dog to York for a city break?

We have been dreaming of taking Frank our French bulldog on holiday with us since we got him over 6 years ago. We have taken him away before but it’s always been with family to a house rather than a hotel. Not a city break just the 3 of us.

The city break transpired because our wedding anniversary is coming up ( it’s today) and Gavin was going to book the Pullman which did an amazing trip to York with food and you spent 4 hours there before you come back. It is supposed to be wonderful and we would like to do it but we thought we could take that £700 and turn it into a weekend away. It turns out we could get two train tickets and three nights for less than £700 so that’s what we did.

York is beautiful.

We both love this city and Yorkshire is one of the friendliest places in the world, and that welcome extends to our furry friends.

So can you city break with your dog?

The answer quite simply is yes.

We didn’t have a single problem talking Frank to the pub, to nice restaurants and even inside shops. Frank is a shy dog he won’t go up to people or products and he doesn’t have a wagging tail to knock over stock. He is a great companion dog and he was welcome in so many places.

There were dogs everywhere we went.

Another couple we met left there dog in the hotel while they went for dinner but we didn’t feel like we needed to do that or would know how Frank would react to being in a new place. So we just adapted to him, which was easy.

Where we stayed

When I first started my search online there were over 130 places for the 3 of us to stay. We wanted somewhere central so we didn’t have to travel into York. Turned out we were 5 minutes from Fossgate and the Shambles, which are the two main places we wanted to explore.

We chose the Moxy in York. It’s was very central, a big room, the air conditioning was wonderful during the heat wave. Normally we like a place with charm and a bit more homely but we were so grateful for the air on that when we go back to York we will definitely stay there again. I have never seen a hotel lobby so we’ll used. People enjoyed drinks and games in the lobby areas which was lovely to see.

The room was fresh and clean and bed was lovely and big. The shower was great, spacious with good pressure and the was motion lighting so you could find the loo during the night. It suited our needs and was a quiet haven away from the soaring heat.

Where there any limits

As friendly as York is we couldn’t do everything, although we walked everywhere it was too hot to spend too much time in the park. He obviously wasn’t allowed in the museum, in the cathedral and in art galleries. Generic high street shops that we didn’t want to go in but all the independent shops were very welcoming.

One pub we came across said no dogs so we went next door to the next one. finding pubs in York isn’t difficult.

Ghost York merchants which I have been looking forward to for years were very welcoming, as well as the majority of shops in the shambles, The Shop that must not be named, The society of alchemists. All suiting my inner witch and interesting to discover.

We don’t have an issue with dog not being allowed in places. I completely agree that large dogs and misbehaving dogs shouldn’t be allowed in. lucky frank is pretty chill and just wants to be with us rather find new things.

I will write a separate blog on where we are and drank only because I don’t want this blog to be too long. But all the cafes we chose were welcoming and I just called and double checked with two restaurants and they were more than happy to have us.

Yes you can take your dog to York for a city break

You will have a wonderful time. when we go back to York we will probably go with friends, I would love to go in winter and see all the big roaring fires in the old pubs.

Now we just have to discover more dog friendly cities in this wonderful country we live in, we would also like to discover more of Scotland and Wales so we will have to plan for next year.

So tell the people you love, you love them, and check your stool it may save your life.
