March is sowing time: day 6 no social media

We got up this morning, made bacon sandwiches ( giving up pork is very slow to happen) and I went straight out to the garden.

With all the renovations we have a lot of cardboard which is a great tool in the garden.

My allotment is still a mess, just like my garden, green house and home but I love spending time in it. I moved all the cardboard up, threw the veg trimming in the new bed I am trying to fill. And placed some cardboard over a new bed I am trying to make. This blocks the sun from the weeds and I may just cover it in soil so it can all break down nicely. I have decided that this bed is going to have my asparagus crowns and artichoke in it.

I gave my garlic an extra blanket of soil and planted some parsnips, this time in a straighter line.

March is sowing time

I then headed to the green house to sow some flowers. We have no more frost predicted and the days are getting warmer so I planted a few seeds of each.

I laid out my trays for planning. It is still a bit cold but I felt I was a little late last year. so I just divided up my trays and sowed a small section of each.

Tip: Never use them all, there is normally far too many, plus if these don’t take, I can sow some more later on. Or you can sow them next year.

Whilst I was sowing I heard a strange squeaky bird song and looked up to see a beautiful woodpecker in the garden. It was a pretty magical moment.

There isn’t much vegetables to start this early except aubergine chilli’s, parsnips and cauliflower. As I have no idea where my aubergines are I planted my cauliflowers. cauliflower seeds are tiny, I only planned on sewing 4 and accidentally spilled half the packet, lucky I like cauliflower!

Marigolds were one of my favourite flowers last year so I am growing 3 different types. I will interplant them with all my veggies as they work well with them.

In my pots I am growing verbena ( which I failed last year, rose mint ( another fail) peas ( the packet said start now even though it’s very early) and artichokes ( which come back each year). But these I am only growing 5 of each and will sow more later on.

I still need to measure up my green house glass as that will keep the heat in a lot more.

After all that I gave them a good drink of water but the lids on and I will check in on them in a few days. It’s still pretty chilly so I expect them to lay dormant for a while yet.

Still no sign of my sweet peas but it’s still early days.

I do love being in the garden.

I hope you enjoyed your Sunday. We are sitting down to watch a film, then heading to the park and then pub. It still feels weird not to post my every move on social media, the woodpecker was something I wish I could have shared although the photo was terrible.

So tell the people you love, you them, and check your stool it may save your life.
