Last night I planted my asparagus crowns

What’s the most fun way to exercise?

Gardening is great exercise.

There is no doubt about it. From lifting huge bags of compost, digging trenches for my crowns. building a temporary fence. It’s constant movement in the great outdoors. Or in my case, East London.

Gardening is work. It hurts your back, your knees your arms, it’s a great work out and you are not even aware of it until you stop.

Gijnlim asparagus crowns

I spent so long planning where my crowns are going to go I didn’t think about practicalities. I don’t want anyone stepping on them. Breaking their root system so I should have put them in a raised bed. it’s easy to accidentally walk over a bed. I spent an hour in the garden last night so hopefully they settle and are happy there.

I may have to buy them a little protective wall to fence them off. asparagus can produce for up to 20 years so they are an investment crop. I won’t get anything from them for the first two years but they will be worth the wait.

My garden steps are my favourite at this time of year. The builder will hopefully start work next week so they won’t look like that then. This means I have a lot of digging to do this weekend. I have bluebells and salvias to move!

It is the most fun because I am not even aware I am doing it! I need to start running soon. Which is another exercise I enjoy.
